Building on the Province’s commitment to help people and communities through the pandemic, local governments and Treaty First Nations may now apply for $100 million in grants to address the impacts of homelessness, support people and strengthen communities’ health and safety.

The Province is investing nearly $1 million to help another 26 communities assess and report on local housing needs, so governments can ensure they deliver homes for people in B.C. while recognizing the uniqueness of each community. 

Effective immediately, the Province is extending the freeze on rent increases until July 10, 2021, under the powers of the Emergency Program Act and COVID-19 Related Measures Act.

The Province is launching a new set of projects through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund with nearly 540 affordable rental homes on the way for people with low to moderate incomes.

The Province has purchased a property at 1176 Yates St. to provide more permanent supportive homes for people experiencing homelessness in Victoria.

British Columbia’s maximum annual allowable rent increase for 2021 is set at 1.4%, which is less than half of what it would have been prior to changes made by the Province in 2018.

The Province, through BC Housing, has purchased property in Victoria to build up to 50 new permanent homes with around-the-clock supports for people in the community experiencing homelessness.

Details on the new repayment framework for renters with outstanding rent from April to August 2020 are available on the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) website, with the moratorium on evictions for non-payment of rent ending ahead of Sept. 1.

The Government of British Columbia, along with its funding partners, is supporting the construction of a new health and community centre to better connect the people of the T’Sou-ke Nation with services they need.
