CFIB Business Barometer Index - The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) uses results from a survey of its members to create the Business Barometer Index, which measures small business confidence. The CFIB expanded the program from a monthly to a biweekly survey between March and May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and has now returned to a monthly report.

Average Weekly Earnings - Average weekly earnings of payroll employees in British Columbia (seasonally adjusted, current dollars) went up in April (+7.5%) compared to the previous month, to reach $1,106.25. Compared to April 2019, average weekly earnings in British Columbia increased by 11.6%, the highest gain in dollar terms among provinces.

Food Services and Drinking Places - Revenues generated in British Columbia’s food service and drinking places industry fell by 42.8% (seasonally adjusted) in April compared to March. Sales for the month were down in all establishment categories, with the largest declines at drinking places and full-service restaurants.

Non-residential Building Investment - Investment in building construction (both residential and non-residential) in B.C. fell by 25.9% (seasonally adjusted) in April compared to March. The decrease was driven by lower residential construction investment (-36.3%) more than offsetting a small increase in non-residential investment (+0.9%) for the month.

Visitor Entries - In April, B.C. welcomed around 48 thousand non-resident travellers (seasonally adjusted), of which 73.0% were from the United States. Non-resident traveller entries to Canada through British Columbia went down by 84.0% compared to the previous month and are down by 93.1% when compared to February.

- April was the first full month of non-essential travel restrictions due to COVID-19, causing visitor entries to Canada via B.C. to drop 84.0% from March.

With COVID-19 causing Canadians to look for safe, controllable ways to socialize with friends and family, Canadians are turning to their BBQs again. Although grilling in Canada has been declining for the past four years due to an increase in condo living and a tendency to socialize in restaurants, May 2020 saw 5% more Canadians lighting up the BBQ compared to May 2019, with grilling rates up 3% in B.C.
