Facts about poverty and food insecurity in B.C.

TogetherBC, the Province’s first poverty reduction strategy, was released in March 2019 as a roadmap to reduce overall poverty by 25% and cut child poverty in half over five years.

  • Addressing poverty is a shared priority between government and the BC Green Party caucus and is part of the Confidence and Supply Agreement.
  • During poverty reduction consultations last year, food insecurity was identified as a concern in communities throughout B.C.
  • Almost half a million British Columbians experience some level of household food insecurity.
  • One in six children under the age of 18 years lives in a household experiencing food insecurity.
  • In Greater Victoria, 14% of households are food insecure, with higher rates among vulnerable populations such as seniors and children.
  • Each year, the Mustard Seed Street Church’s Food Security Distribution Centre collects and distributes roughly 545,000 kilograms (1.2 million pounds) of food throughout the Greater Victoria region.
  • The Food Share Network is an informal regional collaboration of non-profits, school districts, First Nations and organizations committed to a food-secure region.
  • Grocery retailers contributing to the Food Rescue Project include Thrifty Foods, Red Barn Markets, Fairway Markets, Country Grocer and the Root Cellar.
