As recreationalists begin to head out and enjoy the warmer weather, they are reminded about restricted motorized use in the Forster Creek drainage area, including Catamount and North Star glaciers, coming into effect June 1.

The following closures are authorized under Section 58 of the Forest and Range Practices Act:

Forster Creek Meadows:
Closed to motorized use - past where summer roads end - June 1 to Nov. 30 annually.
Open to snowmobiles - Dec. 1 to May 31.

Catamount Glacier:
Closed to motorized use - June 1 to Feb. 14 annually.
Open to snowmobiles - Feb. 15 to May 31.

North Star Glacier:
Closed to motorized use - Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 annually.
No snowmobiles permitted in this area year-round.

The closure areas, approximately 45 kilometres northwest of Radium Hot Springs, are popular destinations for both winter and summer recreation activities including skiing, snowmobiling, mountaineering and hiking.

The closures are in place to prevent conflict between motorized and non-motorized uses, community drinking water concerns and environmental damage such as soil disturbance. Compliance with the closures will be monitored and strictly enforced.

In areas where motorized use is not restricted users are reminded to practise responsible riding and recreation to ensure these areas remain intact for future generations.
