Details about B.C.'s increases in dangerous driving impoundment fees
  • This is the first major impoundment rate adjustment in over a decade.
  • Adjustments are based on an independent analysis, which:
    • recommended substantial increases to serve as a strong deterrent against dangerous driving behaviours; and
    • ensure the fees better align with current industry market rates.
  • RoadSafetyBC administers the Vehicle Impoundment Program, which authorizes peace officers to impound drivers’ vehicles when used in dangerous driving events.
  • In British Columbia, police impound approximately 30,000 vehicles per year.
  • Impoundment periods range from three to 60 days.
  • In 2023, there were 331 motor-vehicle related deaths, with 110 of those deaths occurring between July and September of that year*.
  • From 2013 until 2021, one-third of deaths resulted from motor-vehicle incidents involving drugs and/or alcohol based on the available data*.
