Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Diwali:
“Today in B.C. and around the world, millions of people in the Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities are celebrating Diwali.
“Diwali is a sacred festival of renewal and enlightenment. Celebrants mark the days leading up to Diwali by cleaning their homes, buying new clothes and exchanging gifts and festive food. On Diwali day, diyas are lit as a reminder that light triumphs over dark, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Intricate and colourful rangoli are created out of powders, rice and flowers.
“Also known as the Festival of Lights, it is one of the most important festivals in India, and although it is celebrated in diverse ways in the country, the essence of the festival remains the same – togetherness, hope, renewal and joy. In communities throughout B.C., Diwali is celebrated with music, dance and art in the form of festivals and gatherings throughout the month.
“We honour the vibrant and diverse communities that make our province strong, and Diwali reminds us to appreciate the many contributions that generations of South Asian communities make to B.C.
“Wishing a happy and prosperous Diwali to all who are celebrating.”
