Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Bandi Chhor Divas:
“Sikhs in British Columbia and around the world are celebrating Bandi Chhor Divas.
“This day commemorates the stand taken by the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, who refused to accept his release from prison unless 52 unfairly imprisoned others were also freed. His act of selflessness and generosity continues to inspire Sikhs more than four centuries later.
“Bandi Chhor Divas is a time of spiritual reflection, marked by prayers and the reading of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book. To celebrate this day, homes and gurdwaras will be illuminated by lamps and candles. Families and friends will gather to share sweets and festive meals.
“Bandi Chhor Divas is also a time to remember the many and varied contributions of Sikhs in helping to make our province the diverse and extraordinary place it is.
“Best wishes for a happy Bandi Chhor Divas to all who are celebrating!”
