Jennifer Blatherwick, parliamentary secretary for gender equity, has released the following statement in honour of Two-Spirit Celebration and Awareness Day:
“Today, on Two-Spirit Celebration and Awareness Day, we celebrate the Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQIA+ people in our lives and in communities throughout B.C. and Canada. It is a time to come together with Two-Spirit, queer and trans-gender people, friends and family to honour lived experiences, and deepen awareness of the contributions that strengthen and enrich our communities.
“This year’s theme, ‘Infinite Strength,’ reminds us that we are strongest when we stand together. By working in collaboration and partnership, we continue to build an environment of inclusion and empowerment where everyone is valued – and celebrated – for their unique identities, leadership and contributions.
“We mark this day each year on the spring equinox, symbolizing the shift from the dark, cold winter to the brightness of summer – a time of renewal, rebirth and growth.
“I am privileged to live in a place where we honour the distinct identities that strengthen the continuity and well-being of our communities. Today, I invite all people in British Columbia to join me in reaffirming our commitment to supporting Two-Spirit people and Indigenous-led pathways toward inclusion, equity and safety.”
