Premier David Eby has issued the following statement recognizing Passover:
“Tonight, after the sun goes down, Jewish people in B.C. and around the world will be gathering together to celebrate Passover.
“Many will be celebrating this holiday with a Seder, or ritual feast, which involves specific foods and readings from a book called the Haggadah, that together recall the story of the Exodus of Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt.
“At this feast, only bread that has not risen (matzah) is served, recognizing that the Jewish community didn’t have time to let their bread rise as they fled from Pharaoh’s wrath and sought their freedom.
“Passover marks the first of up to eight days of celebration and remembrance of this important event.
“As we recognize this important holiday, we also recognize the incredible contributions of the Jewish community to B.C. – and condemn antisemitism in all of its forms.
“To all those who are celebrating tonight, may you have a peaceful and happy Passover.
“Chag Pesach Sameach!”
