VICTORIA - Attorney General Barry Penner made the following statement regarding the financial abuse of seniors:
“I want to acknowledge and welcome delegates to the Spotlight on Financial Abuse event, who are meeting in Vancouver today for a forum on the financial abuse of elders. This group of professionals are discussing strategies to prevent, detect and respond to financial abuse.
“Financial abuse is a serious concern for all vulnerable people and particularly our senior population. The Government of British Columbia is committed to supporting healthy, active and independent aging for all British Columbians. This includes living in safe, age-friendly communities, free from all types of abuse.
“Just last week, the B.C. government joined with other governments around the world in recognizing June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This important day raises awareness on an issue that, unfortunately, is often hidden from public view and from those who could assist its victims.
“To those who have gathered today for Spotlight on Financial Abuse, thank you for your dedication to eradicating the financial abuse of elders. On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, I wish you all a successful conference.”
