Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, has released the following statement regarding the BC Coroners Service’s latest report on illicit drug toxicity deaths for February 2021:

The Province and the City of Victoria have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that formalizes their commitment to work together to end current homeless encampments and help prevent encampments in the future.

New clinical resources are available to better support British Columbians during pregnancy, while reducing harms related to substance use.

People struggling with substance-use challenges in B.C. will have additional treatment and recovery options as more than 100 new publicly funded beds in 14 organizations will soon become available around the province.

The first cohort of registered nurses (RNs) is on track to begin prescribing medications for treatment of opioid use disorder, as part of B.C.’s leading-edge overdose response plan. 

Treatment and recovery providers who have been financially challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic are benefiting from grants to ensure ongoing support for people struggling with addictions throughout B.C.

More children and youth will benefit from strengthened mental health and substance use services and support programs as community-based projects receive capital project funding this year through the Community Gaming Grants program.
