B.C. businesses are strengthening food security and food safety by adopting new traceability technology with funding from the governments of Canada and B.C.

The BC Food Hub Network is growing, creating opportunities for producers and food processors while connecting more British Columbians to local food.

 Food and beverage producers will soon have more opportunities to grow their businesses while increasing food security with the development of three new food hubs in Bowser, Cowichan Valley and Victoria.

A collaborative four-year effort between B.C. and Alaska to examine water quality in the Stikine, Taku, and Unuk transboundary watersheds brought together government agencies, Indigenous Nations, industry, and the public to ensure the environmental, cultural, and economic values of these rivers are protected.

An updated, mandatory training program for rural abattoir operators in B.C. will help more British Columbians enjoy safe, locally raised beef, pork and poultry, as well as contribute to food security and support businesses in rural communities.

Successful applicants of the new Small Farm Business Acceleration Pilot Program are receiving funding for farm infrastructure and equipment to help them grow their farm businesses and support local food supply and rural economies.

Post-secondary institutions in British Columbia are working to bring more local food to their campuses.

After consulting with B.C.’s farming and ranching community, the Province is moving forward with a mandatory Premises Identification (ID) regulation to help livestock producers and communities better prepare for emergencies and be equipped to respond to them.

More than 100 farmers in the province have started growing crops and raising livestock on more than 2,023 hectares (5,000 acres) of farmland since 2016 through the B.C. Land Matching Program (BCLMP).
