With unseasonably hot weather forecast for most parts of British Columbia this weekend and into next week, people are encouraged to stay informed about potential risks.

As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, a nationwide test of Canada’s emergency alerting system will take place at 1:55 p.m. (Pacific time) on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

As warmer weather approaches, British Columbians are encouraged to be prepared for the possibility of climate-related hazards, such as floods and wildfires, which are becoming increasingly common.

Coastal communities in B.C. are at risk of tsunamis and the Province is reminding people about the importance of getting prepared as part of Tsunami Preparedness Week from April 9-15, 2023.

More than 57 First Nations and local governments will receive funding to improve and modernize emergency support services (ESS) for people evacuated from their homes during emergencies.

Historic provincial investments will support communities in preparing for the risk of natural disasters related to climate change, along with a new one-stop online platform to help people and communities better prepare for, mitigate and understand disaster and climate risks.

Forty-nine First Nations and local governments throughout B.C. will receive provincial funding to help reduce risks from future disasters related to natural hazards and climate change.

The Province is urging people to be prepared and extremely cautious in the backcountry, with continued high and considerable avalanche risk forecast in many areas of B.C.
