CWMM Consulting Engineers Ltd. took the top award for design and contract preparation of structures at the 8th annual Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Awards, for its work on the Akokli Bridge Replacement project.
On this $6.4-million project, CWMM designed the replacement of the 70-year-old bridge approximately 45 kilometres north of Creston with a new, clear span, curved steel and concrete bridge. The company worked with ministry staff to find the most cost-effective concept for this unique site, and designed a bridge that not only moved vehicles but was "salamander safe" with no impact on the Akokli River.
The Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Awards recognize technical excellence in consulting engineer services that improve transportation infrastructure in British Columbia. Finalists were chosen for projects completed in 2011 in the categories of:
- Design and Contract Preparation - Roads.
- Design and Contract Preparation - Structures.
- Construction Management and Supervision Services.
- Specialized Engineering Services.
Runners-up were Buckland & Taylor Ltd. of North Vancouver for design work on the Quick Bridge project near Smithers and MMM Group of Vancouver for design work on the BNR Overhead Widening and Seismic Upgrade project in Surrey.
