SNC Lavalin took the top award for Transit Engineering Services at the 9th annual Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Awards for its exceptional work on the Transit Operations and Maintenance Facility Project in Kamloops.

SNC Lavalin was awarded a $600,000 contract through BC Transit to design and carry out contract management for a new Kamloops Transit Centre.

The new facility includes an administration and maintenance building, seven service bays, a diesel fuelling station, wash bay, storage area and parking. The new transit centre doubles the capacity for bus parking, increasing the number of spaces from 40 to 85. The new facility will house the Kamloops Transit System for the next 25 years.

By using innovative design techniques, the company maximized safety and efficiency in the bus loop, created sight lines for safe pedestrian crossing and made it possible to accommodate the city's request for an expanded the recycling and municipal works yard and a new BMX track beside the new facility.

Funding for the $15.6-million Kamloops Transit Centre was provided by the Government of Canada through the Building Canada Fund, Major Infrastructure Component ($4 million), the B.C. government ($6 million) and the City of Kamloops ($5.6 million).

Finalists in this category were Higginson Consulting Ltd. of Mill Bay for its work on the Victoria Transit Communications Facility and H5M Group of Vancouver for their work on the Carvolth Transit Exchange and Park-and-Ride Lot.

The Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Awards recognize technical excellence in consulting engineer services that improve transportation infrastructure in B.C.

Finalists were chosen for projects completed in 2012 in the categories of:

  • Design and Contract Preparation - Roads
  • Design and Contract Preparation - Structures
  • Construction Management and Supervision Services
  • Specialized Engineering Services
  • Transit Engineering Services

"This award highlights the technical expertise of SNC Lavalin - in creating a safe, efficient, dynamic and modern transit facility that will serve the families of Kamloops for years to come. We are committed to working with our partners to meet the growing transit needs of communities, and this is a great example of this partnership. Congratulations to all of the finalists for their work to further boost B.C.'s thriving transportation networks."

MLA for Kamloops-South Thompson Kevin Krueger -

"Our city is very proud to have this impressive new transit facility, which will help encourage people to use transit, to get to their destination quickly and to go green at the same time. Congratulations to SNC Lavalin for their outstanding creative vision and expert contract management skills, which brought this project to life."

MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson Terry Lake -

"Kamloops is actively promoting transit as an environmentally friendly and viable mode of transportation, and this infrastructure investment supports more capacity for bus parking in our growing city and offers families a great alternative to driving their vehicles. Congratulations to all involved in this worthwhile transit facility project."
