The Government of British Columbia has renewed its commitment to community development through sport by providing $192,000 in funding for Hosting BC programs, announced Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes.

Forty-three events in 33 communities will receive funding, which is provided by the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and administered by ViaSport. The government invests in sport-hosting opportunities to assist communities with sport, economic, social and community development.

The grants will support a wide range of events throughout the province, including sledge hockey, volleyball, sailing, gymnastics, wheelchair basketball, triathlon and taekwondo, as well as many others.

Hosting BC has invested $4.5 million since 2004 in sporting events in communities throughout the province, building B.C.’s reputation as a prime sport-hosting destination.

Applications are now being taken for the next round of Hosting BC funds. For more information, see http://www.viasport.ca/

Quotes:

Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development -

“Since its inception, Hosting BC has been a resounding success that has had a positive and lasting impact on communities throughout the province. Hosting BC events bring thousands of visitors to our province, generating revenue and jobs for B.C. families and inspiring British Columbians to get active. It’s a winning program that we’re proud of.”

Cathy Priestner Allinger, CEO, ViaSport -

“The Hosting BC grant program is integral to maintaining our province’s profile and reputation as an exceptional event host. It’s thrilling to see a growing number of high-calibre sport events held across our province, each bringing a sense of excitement, camaraderie and pride into every host community.”

Quick Facts:

  • Hosting BC funds competitive level events that support long-term athlete development plans for B.C.’s Provincial Sport Organizations.
  • Grants typically range from $1,000 to $15,000 depending on the level of competition (e.g., provincial, regional, national, international).
  • Applications for funding are reviewed by the Hosting BC Review Committee, which is comprised of leaders in the sport and tourism sectors.
