Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, has released the following statement in celebration of the first Canadian men’s win at the FIFA World Cup 2026 at BC Place in Vancouver on Thursday, June 18, 2026:
“Yesterday marked an extraordinary chapter in Canada’s sporting history. On behalf of the Province of British Columbia, I extend my warmest congratulations to our Canada Men’s National Team on a historic victory against Qatar — an achievement that sparked pride and celebration throughout the country and especially here at home in Vancouver and throughout the province. This win is more than a result on the field; it reflects dedication, resilience and the continued growth of sport in Canada. It reminds us what is possible when a nation comes together in support of its athletes.
“This historic moment was felt in every corner of the province. From community watch parties in Williams Lake to packed restaurants and patios in Vancouver, fans gathered to cheer on the Canadian team, creating an atmosphere of excitement and unity. Sport has the extraordinary ability to bring people together and yesterday we saw that in full force — people of all backgrounds standing side by side, sharing in a collective moment of pride.
“Beyond the emotional impact of yesterday’s win, hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in Vancouver has already delivered a meaningful boost to our tourism and hospitality sectors. Ridership across TransLink’s system can only be described as skyrocketing with especially strong growth in Richmond, Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. Approximately 1.36 million people boarded our buses, SkyTrain and SeaBus on June 18, representing a 14% increase in total daily boardings and an 18% increase in total daily trips compared to a regular Thursday afternoon.
“And restaurants’ and pubs’ food and beverage sales have also increased dramatically. The BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association reports a 20-40% increase in sales and the BC Liquor Distribution Branch estimates a $2.3-million increase in liquor sales to the hospitality sector over the same period last year.
“There has been a palpable, vibrant energy throughout the province since the tournament began June 11. After challenging years, occasions like this represent renewed optimism and opportunity for the many workers and operators who form the backbone of our visitor economy.
“B.C.’s hospitality industry is truly shining. Our communities are offering welcoming spaces for residents and visitors alike. The energy, warmth and diversity on display highlights why Vancouver and B.C. are celebrated globally as destinations where people feel both excited and at home. British Columbians have embraced the Socceroos, Turkish fans and Mudaraj Al Anabi visiting Vancouver, demonstrating that no matter the score, we’re all fans sharing a once-in-a-generation experience and the spirit of the World Cup. It is these moments that reinforce our reputation, inspire future visits and make us all proud to be British Columbians.
“This victory also comes at a meaningful time as we approach National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. Throughout British Columbia, communities will soon gather to honour the cultures, traditions and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. Yesterday’s celebrations echo those same values of connection, inclusion and shared pride. Sport and culture together help us recognize the diverse identities that shape our province and strengthen our sense of belonging.
“Yesterday’s match result also highlights the importance of ongoing investment in sport and community programs. Success on the international stage is built through years of dedication, from grassroots participation to elite competition. This victory belongs not only to the players, but to the coaches, families, volunteers and organizations who support them every step of the way.
“As Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, I am encouraged by the momentum we are seeing. Increased activity in our communities, strong economic performance and a renewed sense of connection all point to a bright future for British Columbia. We can’t wait to host the Flying Kiwis, the Red Devils and fans from Egypt and Switzerland next.
“To the Canada Men’s National Team, thank you for inspiring a nation. And to the Host City of Vancouver, FIFA26 Canada and British Columbians and businesses in B.C., thank you for delivering a spectacular experience for the world.”
