Highway 1 at Tank Hill will open to two lanes of traffic on the new overpass, restoring the grade separation between the highway and the railway.

As of Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, vehicles are travelling on the permanent highway alignment following the completion of infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving safety and long-term resilience. The highway will open to two lanes initially, with the third lane scheduled to open in October 2025 once detour removal is completed.

While detour-removal and site-cleanup works will continue until November 2025, all major construction activities are complete.

The Tank Hill restoration is a key project in the BC Highway Reinstatement Program, a provincewide initiative to rebuild and strengthen transportation corridors damaged by the 2021 atmospheric river.

Upgrades included a new elevated bridge deck, restored grade separation, improved drainage and other enhancements to safety and durability.

This project, with support from the federal government’s Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangement Program, highlights the Province’s commitment to building safer, more resilient infrastructure that supports communities and facilitates the movement of people and goods throughout B.C.
