__________
Engagement is now open to support the implementation of the new Construction Prompt Payment Act, which is designed to ensure fair, on-time payment for contractors and subcontractors.
Engagement is taking place through the B.C. Construction Prompt Payment Act discussion paper. This paper has been distributed to partners in the construction industry to collect feedback through written submissions. This feedback will help ensure future policies and regulations reflect on-the-ground needs of the construction industry.
Industry partners and those affected who would like to contribute feedback are invited to share their thoughts on key parts of the legislation, including:
- how broadly the act should apply
- whether implementation should occur all at once or in phases
- rules for when invoices, notices and payments are considered delivered or made
- how deadlines and business days should be calculated
- interest rates for late payments
- qualifications, training and fee structures for adjudicators
- industry readiness, including standardized forms
- additional implementation supports
Consultation will be open from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, until Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
Prompt-payment legislation provides stronger protection for workers and small businesses
The discussion paper outlines ways B.C.’s Construction Prompt Payment Act could work to help construction businesses get paid on time and resolve payment disputes quicker. It also asks contractors, owners and others in the industry for feedback about how the new rules should work before the law takes effect.
Some industry associations and affected partner organizations are organizing engagement sessions about the act with their members. For more information or for support organizing an engagement session about the act, email: Engage.INF@gov.bc.ca
