Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food, has issued the following statement in support of B.C. Agriculture Day:

After an intense summer of wildfires and drought, B.C.’s farmers and ranchers are receiving additional support to repair or replace damaged infrastructure and to help with the expenses they incurred to keep their animals fed, sheltered and safe during these emergencies.

As the weather in British Columbia transitions into fall, people can expect seasonal stormy conditions and are encouraged to take steps to prepare for the increased rainfall and the possibility of flooding.

The Province is taking action to reduce the impacts of climate-related disasters on people by ensuring critical disaster risk information is available to support community resilience, planning and decision-making.

As British Columbians continue to experience the impacts of record drought and wildfire, farmers and ranchers are receiving support so they can continue to produce food in a changing climate.

Water restrictions for the lower Salmon River and Bessette Creek will expire this week, ending temporary protection orders put in place in August 2023 to help protect threatened salmon populations.

Following significant rainfall in some regions of Vancouver Island, fish population protection orders will be rescinded in the Koksilah and Tsolum rivers, allowing certain water usage to resume.

B.C.’s First Quarterly Report shows the province’s economy is proving resilient amid challenges, including a devastating wildfire season, high interest rates and costs, and a slowing global economy.

The Province is supporting B.C.’s farmers, communities and First Nations with a new fund to help with increased planning and preparation for agricultural emergencies, while strengthening food security for British Columbians.
