Premier John Horgan has released the following statement on the practice of conversion therapy:

“Conversion therapy is nothing more than ignorance and prejudice disguised as a medical treatment.

“Our government has taken steps to ensure, to the degree our jurisdiction allows, that this so-called therapy is not tolerated. Last August, our government called on the federal government to ban the practice in all its forms. This can be done by amending the Criminal Code to cover the full range of circumstances when conversion therapy occurs.

“Now that the new federal cabinet has been sworn in and David Lametti has been re-appointed as attorney general of Canada, it is time that he and the federal government take this appropriate action.

“We are waiting on the federal government to act. The Government of B.C. is committed to ensuring that people of all sexual orientations and gender identities can live without fear or discrimination.”
