About crime prevention in B.C.
  • Since 2017-18, the Crime Prevention and Remediation grant program has provided more than $33 million to help organizations throughout B.C. to further their crime prevention and remediation efforts.
  • This year, the Crime Prevention and Remediation grant program has awarded just over $8.6 million in grants for 221 projects that will help support government priorities in:
    • crime prevention;
    • gender-based violence, violence against women, sexual assault and domestic violence;
    • human trafficking, sexual exploitation and sex-worker safety;
    • Indigenous healing;
    • restorative justice;
    • domestic violence prevention/intervention programming; and
    • child and youth advocacy centres.
  • In Budget 2021, the Province allocated permanent funding of $7.6 million for policing initiatives, including the Gang Suppression Action Plan, First Nations policing and core policing.
  • In March 2021, the Firearm Violence Prevention Act was passed. The act addresses enforcement gaps in existing legislation, such as regulating imitation firearms that are currently unregulated.
  • Recently, government announced the opening of the new BC Provincial Forensic Firearms Laboratory. This will be a centralized firearms intelligence hub, helping increase police capacity to analyze illegal firearms that were used for criminal activity and seized by police.
