B.C. addresses gender-based violence

The action plan will guide future work across government, while building on work already underway to address gender-based violence, including:

  • a multi-year emergency sexual assault services grant program will support the delivery of co-ordinated, community-based emergency sexual assault response services;
  • updates to employment standards to provide paid leave for people facing domestic or sexual violence;
  • work to establish minimum standards for sexual assault response;
  • training for police, Crown counsel and justices;
  • consultations undertaken regarding the non-consensual disclosure of intimate issues, which includes post-secondary students;
  • improved educational and awareness programs in K-12 and post-secondary schools;
  • mandatory sexual violence and misconduct policies at all public post-secondary institutions;
  • funding provided to meet the ongoing demand for services such as counselling, outreach and crisis support for women and children who experience domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes;
  • supporting over 400 victim service and violence against women programs throughout the province to ensure people who need help are getting the counselling and assistance they need; and
  • building hundreds of new transition and safe homes, second-stage housing and affordable housing spaces for women leaving violence.

The action plan will also align with other important initiatives, including:

  • ongoing provincial efforts to respond to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ and Two-Spirit People Calls for Justice, including A Path Forward: Priorities and Early Strategies for B.C.; and
  • The National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence being developed by Women and Gender Equality Canada.
