A Burns Lake community forest group has been honoured by the Province for excellence in forest management and wildfire mitigation.

In response to the end of the mountain pine beetle epidemic and salvage of dead pine in the Lakes Timber Supply Area (TSA), the new allowable annual cut (AAC) for the Lakes TSA will be 970,000 cubic metres, effective immediately.

The BC Wildfire Service is burning slash piles in several areas within the Nadina Fire Zone to help prepare the sites for reforestation in the spring of 2018.

Members of Lake Babine Nation will benefit from forestry skills training and traditional ecological knowledge development that helps advance Lake Babine’s participation in the forest sector, made possible through $210,000 in funding from the Province.

The Skin Tyee First Nation and Nee Tahi Buhn Band have launched a job skills training project that will provide up to 50 community members with increased opportunities for employment and apprenticeships.

Building on the success of an earlier skills training program, Tsil Kaz Koh (Burns Lake Band) and the Wet’suwet’en First Nation are again partnering to provide new educational opportunities for their members. 

Young people of Burns Lake will have an opportunity to learn the skills they will need for tomorrow’s in-demand occupations.
