Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development, has issued the following statement in response to the BC Coroners Service review of ministry-involved youth transitioning to independence:

A 32-hectare prescribed burn in the Gibbs Creek area near Grand Forks, to reduce ecosystem and reduce wildfire risk, may begin as early as Sunday, May 27, weather permitting.

The BC Wildfire Service is planning to conduct an 11-hectare prescribed burn in the Hope Creek area as early as Tuesday, May 8, 2018, to help reduce wildfire threats and prepare the area for replanting.

A 60-hectare prescribed burn will be conducted in the Winlaw Creek area to help reduce wildfire risks and restore local ecosystems.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development will be conducting a 22-hectare prescribed burn to help restore an ecosystem about 15 kilometres north of Deer Park, near Twobit Creek.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development plans to conduct a 180-hectare prescribed burn on Crown land, near Cherry Creek, to restore the area’s ecosystem, and reduce wildfire risks for nearby communities.

Drivers are advised to expect delays starting next week on Highway 3A, while deck resurfacing takes place on the Shoreacres Bridge.

Glade II, the new, built-in-B.C. cable ferry connecting Glade residents with Highway 3A across the Kootenay River, is undergoing final testing on site and will be in service at the beginning of February.

Effective at noon Pacific time on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will once again be allowed throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, due to a decreased risk of wildfire in the region.

The BC Wildfire Service is planning to burn piles of wood debris in the Mt. Buchanan area (about 11 kilometres west of Kaslo) during the week of Oct. 16–20, 2017, to reduce the risk of aggressive wildfires in the area in future.
