Work is underway to enhance forest resilience to protect against the effects of wildfire and climate change in northeastern B.C.

A notice to proceed has been issued for the transfer of a forest tenure in the Fort Nelson Timber Supply area from Canadian Forest Products Ltd. (Canfor) to Peak Fort Nelson Properties Ltd.

Residents and area communities that have long fought to revive Fort Nelson’s forest sector are starting to realize the benefit of their efforts with the approval of the Fort Nelson Community Forest Agreement, in partnership with the British Columbia government.

Below-normal stream flows and signs of drought in smaller streams have caused the Province to declare a Level 3 drought rating for the Fort Nelson area.

Comments are being accepted until Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, on a discussion paper that is part of a comprehensive timber supply review for the Fort Nelson Timber Supply Area.

Under the BC Rural Dividend, the provincial government is providing $100,000 to the Fort Nelson region.

Opportunities for greater input into local forest management are expanding near Fort Nelson following an invitation from Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson to the Fort Nelson First Nation and Northern Rockies Regional Municipality to apply for a community forest agreement.
