Wildfire activity is increasing in the B.C. Interior and travel on some provincial highways is being affected.

As a part of ongoing efforts to improve safety on Highway 5 North, the Province is moving forward with a project to build a dedicated Commercial Vehicle and Safety Enforcement (CVSE) pullout south of Barriere.

Southbound traffic on Highway 5 will be reduced to one lane at the New East Bridge on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m while crews conduct electrical maintenance on the bridge.

Work is underway to restore access on Highway 1 through the southern Interior, after wildfire activity forced closures of sections of the highway.

People are invited to share their thoughts on possible transportation improvements in the Kamloops area.

The ministry is advising motorists to plan ahead, check live traffic conditions on DriveBC.ca and expect delays on the Coquihalla/Highway 5 on the Thanksgiving long weekend.

The Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt is expected to remain closed in both directions well into the evening, and possibly overnight, following an incident involving a burning semi-trailer truck carrying dangerous goods.

Beginning Tuesday, May 23, motorists travelling the Coquihalla Highway over the summer are advised to expect delays, due to two major road and bridge construction projects between Hope and Merritt.
