A new state-of-the-art facility in Nanaimo is a significant step forward in advancing correctional services on Vancouver Island and supporting community safety.

The Province is helping keep people safe by creating hubs of police, dedicated prosecutors and probation officers focused on tackling repeat violent offending in every region of the province.

Snuneymuxw First Nation and the Province have reached an agreement that supports Snuneymuxw’s interests in the cannabis economy, including establishing a cannabis retail store that is expected to open in January 2022.

People in Nanaimo who are at risk of harm or victimization will benefit from a $30,000 grant to create a community-based team of front-line workers to deliver better, faster access to services.

Hundreds of local construction jobs are coming to the mid-island as Stuart Olson Construction Ltd. was selected as the design-build team for the new Nanaimo Correctional Centre.  

With $157 million in capital funding approved, the replacement of Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC) will proceed, creating approximately 1,000 project-related jobs and a purpose-built facility that enhances safety, security and space to continue successful programs.
