Construction of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange has hit a major milestone with the first half of the new crossing now complete.

The next stage of design for the new toll-free, eight-lane tunnel to replace the George Massey Tunnel will advance this summer with selection of the Fraser River Tunnel Project’s preferred proponent, Cross Fraser Partnership.  

Following a request for qualifications, three bid teams have been invited to participate in the next phase of procurement for the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel with a new toll-free, eight-lane tunnel, which will improve travel for people along Highway 99 between Richmond and Delta.

A request for qualifications (RFQ) has been issued to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel with a new eight-lane, toll-free immersed tube tunnel that will save people time and help move goods faster.

Ground was officially broken Thursday, July 7, 2022, on the new five-lane Steveston interchange in Richmond as part of the project that will see the George Massey Tunnel replaced with a new toll-free crossing.

Improved transit reliability, travel-time savings for drivers and more effective active transportation connections are on the way in Richmond.

A new eight-lane immersed-tube tunnel will replace the George Massey Tunnel on Highway 99, providing people a toll-free crossing that aligns with regional interests and improves transit, cycling and walking connections across the Fraser River.
