As part of a strategy to address gang violence and make communities safer, the British Columbia government will invest $500,000 from civil forfeiture grants into anti-gang programming for youth in Surrey, Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, announced today.

The B.C. government announced $15 million for a new transitional housing and shelter project in Surrey for men and women who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

People in need of a safe, warm place to stay, especially during the cold and wet winter months, will soon have access to a new 40-bed shelter in Surrey.

As of Jan. 16, 2017, British Columbians looking to purchase their first home can apply to the B.C. Home Owner Mortgage and Equity Partnership program, which helps first-time homebuyers create secure and stable futures for their families through home ownership.

B.C.’s strong economy means British Columbian families in need of affordable rental housing will soon have access to close to 2,900 new units of housing, thanks to the B.C. government’s funding commitment of $516 million toward the 68 projects announced.

Individuals and families with low-to moderate-incomes and people with disabilities are benefiting from 71 new units of affordable rental housing at Chorus Apartments, which officially opened in Surrey.

As part of the public safety funding announced in February 2016, the Province is committing $15.52 million in funding toward two flood mitigation projects in the City of Surrey that will protect thousands of homes, landmark institutions, and business and industries employing thousands of people.
