The speech from the throne is an important moment in history – it reflects both the priorities British Columbians articulated in the recent election, and the ability to invest in programs and services that British Columbians depend on, thanks to years of sound fiscal management and building Canada’s leading economy.

Provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall has issued the following statement: 

The B.C. government is providing more than $1 million in grants to six Habitat for Humanity B.C. affiliates that will be used to build new affordable homes in Campbell River, Mission, Nanaimo, Richmond, Sechelt and Vernon.

The British Columbia government is providing approximately $4.5 million to keep three temporary shelters open in Greater Victoria.

As of March 31, the Province has opened 500 additional substance-use treatment and intervention beds throughout British Columbia.

Dominion Bond Rating Service (DBRS) has confirmed British Columbia’s AA (high) credit rating, thanks to the Province’s strong fiscal discipline and stable economic growth.

On March 28, the Deputy Premier and the Minister Responsible for Housing, Rich Coleman, released documents that show there has been extensive work done to secure new and innovative housing at New Jubilee House and also at 292 East Hastings Street developments. The documents confirm the projects were negotiated in a fair and above-board manner.

New affordable rental housing is coming to Victoria and Salt Spring Island, thanks to a partnership between the Province, the Capital Regional District (CRD) and Island Health.
