With the onset of warmer temperatures, increased snow melt in parts of B.C.'s southern interior have amplified waterway risks.

A new report showcasing a range of strategies for dealing with flood risks associated with sea level rise has been released.

The Lower Mainland's expansive network of dikes will require major upgrades over the next several decades to guard against rising sea levels, according to a report released from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

More than 1,200 additional emergency shelter spaces have been identified in approximately 70 communities to help those in need of temporary shelter access a warm place to stay during extreme winter weather conditions.

Minister of Justice Shirley Bond has issued the following statement: "I understand that these are very challenging times for those who have been impacted by the recent flooding around the province.

British Columbians should consider flood and emergency conditions while planning summer holidays, outdoor activities and Canada Day celebrations.

While over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water, the next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters.

Co-operative agreements and interjurisdictional partnerships have ensured resources and technical expertise to assist in emergency response efforts to flooding said Shirley Bond, Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of the man who died when a bridge on which he was standing was swept away by flood waters on June 23, 2012.

The province continues to urge residents to evacuate when emergency officials request it.
