Over the Victoria Day holiday weekend, Wildfire Management Branch crews from the Cariboo Fire Centre responded to nine new wildfires. Fire suppression efforts also continued on the Pelican Lake fire.

The Province and the Tsilhqot'in National Government (TNG) are developing a government-to-government agreement outlining the short-term and long-term steps to implement the Supreme Court of Canada decision on Aboriginal title.

Since April 1, the Wildfire Management Branch has responded to 24 wildfires within the Cariboo Fire Centre that have burned about 500 hectares. All of these fires were human-caused and therefore preventable.

Effective at noon on April 27, 2015, Category 3 open burning will be prohibited by the Wildfire Management Branch throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent the public.

The Ministry of Environment advises that a series of ecosystem restoration burns is planned for the Churn Creek Protected Area from March 25 to April 17, 2015, weather permitting.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is planning a series of controlled burns near Chimney Lake and Felker Lake from March 17 to April 10, 2015, weather conditions permitting.

The Cariboo Fire Centre is encouraging the public to exercise caution with any outdoor burning activities, due to an increased wildfire risk in the region.

Many areas of the Cariboo Region have experienced significantly wetter conditions than normal in 2014.

The latest water samples collected from Quesnel River off the Likely Bridge between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2014, and Quesnel River off the Gravelle Ferry Bridge between Nov. 26 and Dec. 17, 2014, are consistent with previous results.
