The Province is urging the public to stay safe and aware of wildfire risks as people travel around British Columbia to spend Victoria Day long weekend with friends and family and enjoy the beautiful, great outdoors.

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, in collaboration with the BC Wildfire Service, plans to complete a 23-hectare fuel management project around the community of Dease Lake throughout the spring and summer of 2019 to help reduce wildfire risks.  

The B.C. government is providing $750,000 to the Fraser Basin Council to support and explore flood management strategies.

A new $15 fee is being applied to two recreation sites in the Powell River area that are being upgraded to fee-for-service sites to provide better camping services.

The BC Wildfire Service plans to conduct a 39-hectare prescribed burn in the Date Creek area, about 26 kilometres northwest of the Village of Kispiox, to prepare the site for replanting and help reduce wildfire risks.

Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, has issued the following statement:

The BC Wildfire Service plans to conduct a 17-hectare prescribed burn in the Crawford Creek area as early as Monday, May 13, 2019, to help reduce wildfire threats and prepare the area for replanting.

Local governments, Indigenous communities and organizations, as well as not-for-profit organizations are eligible and encouraged to apply for funding in the sixth intake of the BC Rural Dividend program.

The BC Wildfire Service has added to the list of activities not allowed when a Category 2 open burning prohibition took effect throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction at noon on Friday, May 10, 2019.

Tree replanting in areas burned by the 2017 wildfires is underway in the Cariboo region, which will help re-establish wildlife habitat, increase the future timber supply and capture greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
