St. James Community Service Society, a non-profit housing provider celebrating 50 years of service within the Downtown Eastside and across Vancouver, has been selected to develop, manage and operate an innovative project.

The Province and the City of Coquitlam have reiterated their commitment to develop a new emergency shelter for people who are homeless in the Tri-Cities.

Catherine Romanko has been appointed public guardian and trustee of British Columbia. The appointment was effective Oct. 10, 2011, for a six-year term. Romanko succeeds Jay Chalke, who served for 11 years.

Health Minister Michael de Jong has announced that the site, home to the new Canuck Place Children's Hospice, Abbotsford Hospice Society and Matthew's House, will be named the Dave Lede Campus of Care.

People at risk of homelessness are getting the housing, support and help they need at two new buildings which provide 170 supportive housing apartments and 15 Seniors Rental Housing apartments in Vancouver.

The Province will continue to support shelter spaces in the City of Vancouver this winter with ongoing funding for HEAT shelters and an expansion of the Extreme Weather spaces.

B.C. smokers lit up phone lines calling 8-1-1 this week to get help quitting. Over 7,100 nicotine replacement therapy orders were taken during the first week of the Province's smoking cessation program coming into effect Friday, Sept. 30.
