British Columbia is leading the country in economic growth, and continues to rely on economic immigration to meet labour market demand.

The Government of British Columbia recognizes the important role of newcomers to help build B.C.’s strong and sustainable economy.

In the first 11 months of 2016, more than 5.1 million international visitors arrived in British Columbia, a 12.2% increase over the same time frame in 2015.

Five Refugee Response Teams from throughout the province have received a second round of funding, sharing nearly $230,000 to continue helping refugees settle and integrate into B.C. communities.

Along with the United Nations, the UNHCR, the Government of Canada and civic groups in more than 100 countries, the Province has proclaimed June 20, 2016, as World Refugee Day in British Columbia.

Five community organizations have been chosen to lead Refugee Response Teams to help refugees settle and integrate into British Columbia communities.

The Province is taking a number of steps to prepare for the arrival, resettlement and integration of refugees in B.C.

Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour introduced legislation as a foundation for the Province’s role in selecting newcomers to B.C.

Recognizing the severity of the global humanitarian crisis in Syria, the Government of British Columbia is creating a $1-million readiness fund for Syrian refugees settling in B.C.
