Nathan Cullen, Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, has released the following statement regarding the federal government’s decision to transition away from open-net pen salmon farming:

Vancouver Island will soon benefit from more than 76,000 hectares of new conservation areas in Clayoquot Sound.

Those who commit offences that harm wildlife and fish, including illegal hunting and angling, will soon face higher fines.

Residents in urban areas are encouraged to give deer plenty of space to reduce human-deer conflicts during deer fawning season.

The Province and Blueberry River First Nations are moving forward with implementation of the Gundy High Value 1 Plan, consistent with the Blueberry Implementation Agreement, to protect Treaty Rights, support restoration and land protection measures, and create more certainty for everyone in northeastern B.C. who relies on resource industry jobs to support their lives and families.

The Province is securing a better future for B.C.’s forests and communities by taking better care of more old-growth forests, supporting local jobs and building a more sustainable and resilient forestry industry.

To support government’s efforts to prevent invasive species, British Columbia’s chief veterinarian has issued an order making it illegal to transport watercraft in British Columbia with the drain plug still in place, as of May 17, 2024.

The Province is updating limited-entry hunting regulations to sustainably manage B.C. wildlife, respect First Nations’ hunting rights and provide hunters with a diversity of recreational and economic opportunities.
