Effective immediately, British Columbia’s chief forester Diane Nicholls has set new allowable annual cut (AAC) levels for the Tree Farm License (TFL) 43, located near Powell River. 

Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation; Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development; and Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast; have issued the following joint statement regarding recent acts of racist anti-Indigenous vandalism on the Sunshine Coast:

Mount Elphinstone, located on the west side of Howe Sound between Gibsons and Sechelt on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, is designated as provincial forest. Current land use supports management for a variety of values, including forestry, water, wildlife and recreation.

A remote lake in the Sunshine Coast area of British Columbia has been officially named Phare Lake to commemorate the late John Phare, who died in a tree-felling accident while working on the Old Sechelt Mine wildfire on July 5, 2015.

As part of its ongoing commitment to reduce wildfire threats, the B.C. government is providing more than $53,000 in community resiliency investment grants to support projects on the Sunshine Coast.
