Areas in the Sunshine Coast are undergoing name changes to reflect the language, culture and heritage of local Indigenous peoples.

Drought and water scarcity continues to impact most of the southern half of British Columbia.

Effective immediately, British Columbia’s chief forester Diane Nicholls has set new allowable annual cut (AAC) levels for the Tree Farm License (TFL) 43, located near Powell River. 

Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation; Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development; and Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast; have issued the following joint statement regarding recent acts of racist anti-Indigenous vandalism on the Sunshine Coast:

Mount Elphinstone, located on the west side of Howe Sound between Gibsons and Sechelt on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, is designated as provincial forest. Current land use supports management for a variety of values, including forestry, water, wildlife and recreation.

As part of government’s new approach to managing old growth in British Columbia, a two-person, independent panel is engaging British Columbians to get input and hear perspectives on managing the province’s old-growth forests for ecological, economic and cultural values.

Effective at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019, all open fires will again be permitted throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction.

The BC Wildfire Service will rescind its Category 2 open fire prohibition in Haida Gwaii effective at noon on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019.

Effective at noon Pacific time on Thursday, May 30, 2019, Category 2 open burns will be prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction to reduce wildfire risks and protect public safety.

The BC Wildfire Service will conduct a wildfire training exercise with Whistler Blackcomb resort staff and members of the Whistler Fire Rescue Service on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, near the top of the Fitzsimmons Express chairlift.
