The British Columbia government is providing $550,000 to support five community projects in the Province’s Skeena region, Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, announced today.

The BC Wildfire Service is burning slash piles in several areas within the Fraser Valley to help prepare the sites for reforestation in spring 2018.

Effective at noon Pacific time on Oct. 13, 2017, Category 3 fires will once again be permitted within the Columbia Fire Zone in the Southeast Fire Centre, due to a decreased risk of wildfire in that region. Category 2 open fires have been allowed in the Columbia Fire Zone since Sept. 30.

The BC Wildfire Service is planning to conduct a series of controlled open burns in the Prince George Fire Zone to help reduce Douglas fir beetle populations in the Pidherny area, which lies within the City of Prince George’s jurisdictional boundaries.

Effective at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, the area restriction that’s been in place around the Elephant Hill wildfire north of Ashcroft was rescinded. The BC Wildfire Service no longer needs to restrict access to the area to protect public safety or conduct its firefighting operations.

The recent downturn in the weather has decreased the number of new wildfire starts and reduced aggressive wildfire behaviour in the Southeast Fire Centre. Initial attacks on new wildfires have been successful.
