With increasing temperatures and drier conditions in many parts of the province, British Columbians are urged to do everything they can to prevent wildfires on the B.C. Day long weekend and in the weeks ahead.

A remote lake in the Sunshine Coast area of British Columbia has been officially named Phare Lake to commemorate the late John Phare, who died in a tree-felling accident while working on the Old Sechelt Mine wildfire on July 5, 2015.

Given the increasing popularity of electric bikes, a new policy has been developed for the safe, appropriate use of electric bikes on designated trails managed by Recreation Sites and Trails BC.

Under the BC Rural Dividend Program, the Government of British Columbia is providing $935,925 for 11 projects in the Cariboo region.

The Rocky Mountain Trench Ecosystem Restoration Program, in conjunction with the BC Wildfire Service, BC Parks and the Rocky Mountain Trench Natural Resources Society, plans to conduct a series of ecosystem restoration burns in the Premier Lake area.

The BC Wildfire Service will help BC Parks conduct a 100-hectare ecosystem restoration burn in the Dry Farm area of the Churn Creek Protected Area, about 75 kilometres west of 100 Mile House, between April 17 and May 17, 2019.

The BC Wildfire Service, in collaboration with BC Parks, will be burning piles of wood debris in Call Lake Provincial Park between April 15 and May 31, 2019, as part of a multi-year FireSmart project to reduce wildfire risks in the area.

Effective at noon on Monday, April 15, 2019, Category 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.

The BC Wildfire Service, in collaboration with its partners in the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction, has decided to discontinue exempting the “fog zone” when it implements open fire prohibitions on Vancouver Island.
