Aboriginal post-secondary students studying in the lower mainland will benefit from a range of new and expanded programs as the result of $75,000 in one-time funding provided to eight individual public post-secondary institutions.

A new orientation manual for public post-secondary institutions has been developed to provide guidance and support effective governance throughout the province.

The Government of British Columbia announced the appointment of a commissioner under the Private Training Act (PTA) to serve as an avenue of appeal for private training institutions for certain decisions made by the registrar.

The Private Training Act will be brought into force through regulation effective Sept. 1, 2016, and will benefit students and private training institutions, including language schools.

Northern Lights College (NLC) will receive $150,000 to support training for workers affected by the temporary decreased production at the Chetwynd Mechanical Pulp Mill.

The funding is also expected to provide additional training opportunities for students in other communities in the Northwest including workers affected by the closure of the Canfisco cannery.

Targeted funding of $339,000 for 176 additional trades training seats will give Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) students access to training in a variety of in-demand occupations vital to the economy of British Columbia.
