Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has issued the following statement regarding the federal Cannabis Act:

The BC Coroners Service has scheduled a public inquest into the death of William Ryan Fisher, beginning July 17, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. at the Burnaby Coroners’ Court (20th floor – 4720 Kingsway, Metrotower II, Metrotown, Burnaby). 

The Province has released an expanded toolkit to help local governments interested in making their streets and related features safer, no matter how people get around.

 In response to recommendations from the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry, and taking into consideration the findings of other inquiry and review processes across Canada, B.C. is developing new provincial policing standards to promote equality in the delivery of policing services throughout the province.

In a step forward for British Columbia's relationship with Indigenous peoples, leaders of B.C.'s justice and public-safety sector met with Indigenous leaders, justice experts and community workers, for two days at the 10th B.C. Justice Summit on June 1 and 2, 2018, to discuss the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the justice system.

As the Province and local authorities move from flood response to recovery, Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has amended his request for federal resources, and offered his gratitude to the federal government and provincial public safety partners for their help during the recent flooding:

Following a review of 200 deaths of young people who died transitioning to independence from government care between 2011 and 2016, a death review panel has issued a series of recommendations to several provincial ministries.

With the flood situation in many parts of the province beginning to stabilize, the Government of British Columbia has amended its request for federal assistance to support B.C.’s response to flooding.

The Government of British Columbia has underscored its commitment to work with Indigenous peoples in the spirit of respect and collaboration by introducing a set of draft principles designed to guide the daily work of provincial government employees. Don Wright, head of the BC Public Service shared the draft principles with all 27,000 public service employees on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
