The Province and the City of Kelowna are working together to provide individuals experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness with access to more supportive housing and shelter spaces.

Vulnerable people experiencing homelessness will now have access to additional safe shelter spaces during the cold winter months and times of extreme weather in communities around British Columbia.

Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Selina Robinson and Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Shane Simpson have issued the following joint statement in recognition of Homelessness Action Week, Oct. 8-14:

The Province is investing $24 million to increase access for low-income families to fresh food, dental and hearing care for children, and to support community initiatives to reduce poverty.

The Province is providing the Rick Hansen Foundation with $9 million to further their work building accessibility in B.C.

To further reduce barriers and make services and resources more easily accessible for people with disabilities, the Province is providing the BC Spinal Cord Injury Community Services Network (BC SCI Network) with $5 million to enhance their services for British Columbians with a physical disability.

Green Frog is a pest control company that is doing more than just dirty work. By working with and hiring people with barriers to employment at risk of homelessness, they are helping others to rebuild their lives.

In 2013, Atira Women’s Resource Society built the first multi-dwelling housing project in Canada using recycled shipping containers.

Individuals and families with low-to moderate-incomes and people with disabilities are benefiting from 71 new units of affordable rental housing at Chorus Apartments, which officially opened in Surrey.
