Communities south of the Fraser River are one step closer to high-quality, low-cost transportation now that all three contracts have been awarded for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain project.

Significant new funding to widen and improve Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley will relieve traffic congestion and help ease daily commutes between Langley and Abbotsford — whether by car, bus, bike or on foot.

The next stage of design for the new toll-free, eight-lane tunnel to replace the George Massey Tunnel will advance this summer with selection of the Fraser River Tunnel Project’s preferred proponent, Cross Fraser Partnership.  

People travelling in the Fraser Valley will benefit from a wider Highway 1, better cross-highway connections and more sustainable transportation options, with proposed improvements between the 264th Street Interchange and Highway 11 Interchange now available for public comment.

Rob Fleming, B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, tabled Bill 23, which proposes changes to the act, in the legislature on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

The Province is taking action to address TransLink’s urgent financial needs to protect transit service levels and investment plans, while providing reliable, affordable public transit that connects people to jobs, schools and essential services, enabling the transportation authority to plan for the region’s future.

Construction is set to begin on the Province’s Highway 1 216th–264th Street Widening Project, which will help relieve congestion for drivers and accommodate more sustainable transportation options for all travellers.
