To create and support good jobs in British Columbia’s coastal forest sector, government is making policy changes to increase the processing of B.C. logs on the coast and to reduce wood waste by redirecting it to B.C.’s pulp and paper mills.

People in the Cowichan Lake communities and Pacheedaht First Nation will benefit from a unique community forest agreement for the Qala:yit [Kwah-LIE-it] Community Forest, reached in partnership with the provincial government.

Proponents of the Qala-yit [Kwah-LIE-it] Community Forest are being invited to apply for a unique community forest agreement, the first community forest agreement that allows for a new form of partnership with BC Timber Sales through a reduced volume condition contained in the agreement.

Members of the K'ómoks and Qualicum First Nations have an enhanced voice in local forest stewardship and greater opportunity for economic development through forestry agreements signed with the Province, moving British Columbia and the First Nations further down the path of reconciliation.

The Great Bear Rainforest was the largest forest conservation project showcased at a special ceremony by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace under The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy Initiative.
