The B.C. government will fund more than 700 extreme weather shelter spaces across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley this winter to help those whose health and safety may be threatened by cold, wet weather.

Health Minister Terry Lake issued the following statement in response to the Office of the Seniors Advocate report "The Journey Begins: Together, We Can Do Better":

People at risk of homelessness, including youth, women, Aboriginal people and those leaving correctional facilities or hospitals in Victoria now have expanded access to rental assistance and support services with the launch of the new Homeless Prevention Program.

This past Thanksgiving weekend is a reminder that some residents in the Interior are struggling to find affordable housing, or are seeking emergency shelter.

Government is committing $500,000 for 2015 Age-friendly Community Planning and Project grants to help local governments establish or continue projects and community planning that supports healthy, active seniors.
