The Yukon has requested firefighting assistance from British Columbia due to an increase in wildfire activity there, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson announced.

Local authorities are the legislated lead in an emergency, but the B.C. government provides assistance through Emergency Management BC's (EMBC) co-ordination role that helps communities connect with the resources they need.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond released the following statement on emergency preparedness to deal with current flood conditions facing several regions of B.C.

In emergency flood situations, residents near any body of water are advised to be particularly careful around high water.

As a result of forecasts of prolonged weather systems bringing rain and increased snow melt to regions where water levels are already high, the River Forecast Centre in B.C. has issued several advisories and warnings.

Wildlife conservation efforts in southeast B.C. received a big boost today with a new agreement between the Province and Ducks Unlimited Canada to jointly operate the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area for the next 30 years.

The public is urged to take extra care near the Okanagan River because of high water levels. Recent rain events combined with this year's snowpack melt have required ministry staff to release additional water from Okanagan Lake.

People are urged to take precautionary measures during the current threat from flooding as a result of snowpack melting and wet weather in regions throughout the province.
