A major wind event is forecast to hit the Cariboo and southern British Columbia today, bringing gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour to some areas.

With many people being displaced due to wildfires in British Columbia, there are two main methods of obtaining aid.

The B.C. government recognizes the overwhelming generosity of British Columbians and the various organizations who are pulling together to help those affected by the wildfires burning in various areas throughout the province.

The Province asks wildfire evacuees to continue to heed evacuation orders and alerts, and thanks communities outside fire zones that are hosting affected individuals, pets and livestock.

Residents of areas currently experiencing wildfires are urged to prepare ahead in case of an evacuation alert or order.

As part of the Province’s 2012 agreement, the Canadian Red Cross is providing registration services to those displaced by wildfires in the province.

Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Emergency Management BC, this evening announced a provincial state of emergency to ensure a co-ordinated response to the current wildfire situation and to ensure public safety.

Drivers are advised that Highway 1 will be closed overnight between McKenzie Avenue/Admirals Road and Six Mile Road to ensure the safety of drivers and construction crews while the old pedestrian-cyclist bridge is removed.

With the Canada Day long weekend approaching, motorists are reminded to expect delays on Highway 5 (Coquihalla) between Hope and Merritt due to two major road and bridge construction projects.
