On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Government of British Columbia, I would like to extend my best wishes to all the curlers, coaches and fans participating in the 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup in Penticton.
It is truly an honour for British Columbia to host this star‐studded international event in Penticton. This is the third time this event has taken place in British Columbia - and it's fantastic to have North America proudly represented by four teams from Canada. This tournament has some of the best curlers in the world competing, including Olympic medallists, national and world champions.
The B.C. government is proud to support the Continental Cup through the Hosting BC program - and to support sport in general through a variety of funding programs. In fact, since 2001, the B.C. government has invested more than $1 billion in sport.
The Continental Cup is a tangible example of how sport can bring people together and drive positive change. Events such as this provide both economic and social benefits. We know that funding sport pays off on many levels and we are thrilled to be able to claim one of the highest participation rates in sport and physical activity in the country. High profile sport and cultural events attract visitors to our province, and that creates jobs, which is great for the economy and for British Columbians and their families.
I want to thank the organizing committee and all who have volunteered their time to bring this prestigious event to Penticton. A championship such as this showcases the dedication, focus and self‐discipline of athletes and the commitment of coaches, officials and others who have contributed to each athlete's success. Each athlete in this competition is a role model for British Columbians. I wish you all the very best in this tournament.
Sincerely,
Bill Bennett
Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development
