Bill 10, introduced today by Attorney General Barry Penner, contains amendments to the Wills, Estates and Succession Act to ensure it aligns with Nisga'a and Treaty First Nation laws.

As a result of treaty legislation, the Nisga'a First Nation and other Treaty First Nations have authority to make their own land laws. The amendments clarify how the act will work in the context of Nisga'a and Treaty First Nation lands.

If passed, the act will also make other minor legislative updates, clarifications and housekeeping amendments. For example, it will ensure the act correctly refers to other enactments, such as the Supreme Court civil rules. Furthermore, it will change a number of sections to provide more flexibility in drafting estate administration rules to allow those proceedings to progress more quickly and economically.
